Sermon Notes

We are glad that you have joined us this morning as we begin the new year worshipping Jesus together and being reminded of who He is!

If this is your first time here, please fill out one of the cards in the pew and give the card on to any of our ushers if you would like us to contact you with more information about our church.

Prayer Requests & Praises

  1. Pray for our missionaries John & Maureen Becker (African Inland Mission). Praise God for the strategic meeting in London last week where 30 global leaders from various churches, agencies and organizations gathered together to answer the question “How can we work together to see every unreached people group engaged with a church planting movement strategy that can result in multiplying disciples and churches?”  Pray that many would come to know Jesus through the fruits of this meeting.
  2. Praise God for last Friday’s Coffee House night with MVCCC and CTCC. Pray that those who have attended got a glimpse of church fellowship and God’s love.
  3. Pray for our current high school seniors (Micah Lee, Joshua Ho, Zachary Chan, Vincent Xu, Murial Wang, Tiffany Chang, and Alice Shih) as they are in the process of deciding on colleges. Pray they will continue to seek the Lord for peace and discernment.
  4. Pray for our summer retreat committee (Grace Huang, Jonathan Yang, Ruth Chu, Minister Lianhai Fu and Elder Jonathan Sue) as they continue to plan, coordinate and prepare for our first ever joint Summer Retreat.
  5. Pray for our Pastor-Elder Board (PEB) as they continue the process of searching for either a youth minister or associate pastor for our English Ministry. Pray for God’s provision and for wisdom in the process.

Recommended Resources on the Book of Daniel

The following are some of the commentaries consulted in preaching through the book of Daniel:

Daniel (Reformed Expository Commentary) by Iain M. Duiguid

  • This commentary strikes a good balance between interpreting the text (exegesis) and applying the text (application). If you can only refer to one commentary on Daniel, use this one!

Daniel (NIV Application Commentary) by Tremper Longman

  • Similar to Duiguid’s Daniel, this is also a good balanced commentary for general readers.

Daniel (Word Biblical Commentary) by Jay Goldingay

  • Probably the best technical (in-depth) scholarly commentary on Daniel which not only gets into the original languages (Hebrew & Aramaic) of Daniel but also interacts with other scholarly works and interpretations of Daniel.

Preaching Christ from Daniel by Sidney Greidanus

  • Less a commentary but more a guide for pastor/teachers to see and teach Christ in the book of Daniel.

Daniel (Geneva Series of Commentaries)  by E.J. Young

  • An older but just as useful more technical commentary on Daniel. This is a good companion commentary to Goldingay’s.

New City Catechism (from www.newcitycatechism.com/intro.php)

We hope that this will be a tool for us to use in discipling our children, one another and ourselves as a church community.  The New City Catechism is also available online & for your smart phones.

Question 28: What happens after death to those not united to Christ by faith?

Answer: At the day of judgement they will receive the fearful but just sentence of condemnation pronounced against them.  They will be cast out from the favorable presence of God, into hell, to be justly and grievously punished, forever.

Passage(s): John 3:16-18, 36
