Sermon Notes

“The Final Charge” (2 Timothy 4:1-5)

Do what? Preach the Word v. 2a

Do when?  In and out of season v.2b

Do how?  Reproving, rebuking & exhorting yet with complete patience & teaching v. 2c

Do why?  Before things become too bad or too late v.3-4

Conclusion of charge v.5

Consistently clear-headed (do how)

Preserving through pain (do when)

Sharing the Gospel or Good News (do what)

Completing your ministry call (do why)

As a believer in Christ, of all the ‘good and helpful’ things I do for or say to others, how central or consistent is the proclamation, speaking or sharing of God’s Word in my conversation with and care for others?

As a believer in Christ, why may I feel or think I am not ready to proclaim God’s Word?  What steps am I willing to take to ready myself?

As a believer in Christ, is my proclamation of God’s Word filled with both truth and love?  Candor and grace?  If not, what change(s) must I make?

As a believer in Christ, do I realize that those around me need to hear God’s Word and the Good News of the Gospel before things become ‘too bad or too late’?  Who are these people?  When will I tell them?

Recommended Resources on Discipleship

“The Cost of Discipleship” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Considered the classic book on discipleship, this book is worth reading, re-reading, and

-re-reading esp. considering the author ended up dying in a concentration camp for his faith.

“Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream” by David Platt

A powerful, convicting read on what it means to die to ourselves and follow Jesus.  His follow up book, “Follow Me: A Call to Die.  A Call to Live” further explores this theme.

“Discipling: How to Help Others Follow Jesus” by Mark Dever

Short, concise book on what does it look like to “make disciples” – help others become more like Christ.

“The Gospel-Centered Life” by Bob Thune & Will Walker

One of the “core” books for our church on growing as a disciple.

“Discipleship Defined” by Eric Russ

Very clear and convicting book on what is discipleship, why is discipleship central to the Christian faith, and how do we go about making disciples.

“What Jesus Demands from the World” by John Piper

A longer book which can be read daily (50 chapters) on what it means to follow (i.e. obey) the commands of Jesus

New City Catechism (from www.newcitycatechism.com/intro.php)

We hope that this will be a tool for us to use in disciplining our children, one another and ourselves as a church community.  The New City Catechism is also available online & for your smart phones.
